How Transformational Leadership Builds Sustainable Competitive Advantage in Islamic Educational Institutions: An Integrated Four-Dimensional Leadership Framework

Abstract

This study examines how a madrasah head implements transformational leadership to build sustainable competitive advantage at MTs Modern Bani Adam, Boyolali. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected from three purposively selected informants, namely the madrasah head and two teachers directly involved in flagship programs, through interviews, observation, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model with source and technique triangulation. Unlike prior studies that treat the four leadership dimensions as independent, additive predictors, this study shows that they operate as a sequential, culturally embedded process shaped by the madrasah’s Javanese context: exemplary conduct builds trust, vision alignment transforms trust into shared direction, intellectual stimulation channels this direction into innovation, and individualized consideration distributes the resulting capacity across teachers. Theoretically, the study extends Bass and Riggio’s framework beyond its Western corporate origins. Practically, it provides a concrete framework for madrasah leadership training, succession planning, and leadership development.

He is an academic and lecturer at Universitas Islam Negeri Salatiga, Indonesia. He currently serves as Head of the Department of Islamic Education, Faculty of Tarbiyah and Teacher Training, where he contributes to academic leadership and the development of Islamic education.
